Chapter one · The rooftop experience

An evening, three floors above the street

Vertigo sits on the third floor of Pankaj Central Plaza, with rooftop tables under the open sky and an indoor room for the months that do not allow it.

Through the day it runs as a cafe — a long table for a working morning, a short one for a coffee between errands, and a kitchen that keeps going until half past eleven at night.

After dark the room changes hands. It is turned over to whatever is being marked: a kitty party on a weekday afternoon, a birthday that runs late, an anniversary dinner, a farewell for someone leaving the city, a wedding function that needs a floor of its own.
